KOHTI TUHOA: Entire Pelon Neljäs Valtakunta LP Streaming At Noisey Ahead Of Southern Lord North American Release

Noisey is now streaming the entire Pelon Neljäs Valtakunta full-length by Helsinki, Finland hardcore punk warriors, KOHTI TUHOA, ahead of the LP’s North American release through Southern Lord in November.

Recorded in May 2017 at V.R. Studio in Turku, Finland, Pelon Neljäs Valtakunta was engineered by Jussi Vuola, mixed by Jussi Vuola and KOHTI TUHOA, mastered and cut by Jukka Sarapää at Timmion Cutting, and finalized with artwork by returning artist Jaakko Karjula. The album crushes twelve relentless tracks of socio-political unrest, including a cover of Painajainen’s “Saatanan Lampaat.”

Alongside an interview with KOHTI TUHOA, Noisey refers to the band as, “a crucial new voice in Finnish hardcore,” praising of their sound, “the quartet delivers an acerbic old-school punch with enough of an angular edge to keep things sounding violently fresh.”

Unleash KOHTI TUHOA’s Pelon Neljäs Valtakunta at Noisey RIGHT HERE.

Southern Lord will issue Pelon Neljäs Valtakunta on LP and digital formats in North America on November 24th; find digital preorders HERE and vinyl and merch bundle options HERE. Svart Records is releasing the album in Europe.

KOHTI TUHOA just completed their first North American tour earlier this month with a run through the East Coast US and Canada. A video of the band’s entire set from their Brooklyn show was captured via Max Volume Silence, playing HERE.

KOHTI TUHOA’s 2015-issued debut LP, Rutiinin Orja, was considered by many as the most exciting hardcore punk record out of Scandinavia in ages. Their sophomore album Pelon Neljäs Valtakunta is constructed from similar building blocks of aggression based at sociopolitical injustice, but with the band’s sound taking a step further towards genre classicists such as Discharge and Disorder, not to mention classic Finnish hardcore punk acts such as Terveet Kädet, Varaus, and Riistetyt.

Stand by for new KOHTI TUHOA tour dates and more to be announced. For review copies of Pelon Neljäs Valtakunta and interviews with KOHTI TUHOA in North America contact dave@earsplitcompound.com and internationally contact nathan@svartrecords.com.

CENTURIES To Release Second LP, The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding, Through Southern Lord In January; “Bygones” Now Streaming

CENTURIES announces the band’s incoming second LP, The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding. The album is now set for January release through Southern Lord Recordings, and the track “Bygones” has been released early as the band begins to book live actions for the upcoming year.

Formed in 2008 in South Florida, and having toured both the US and Europe several times, CENTURIES has experienced geographical and member shifts since the release of their 2013-issued Taedium Vitae debut through Southern Lord, the current lineup based in the US out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Nashville, Tennessee, and overseas out of Manchester, UK. The time between albums sees the band returning with the expected scathing assault of their first record, yet the sound is more refined, focused, and intense, as proven on their recently completed sophomore album, The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding.

Recorded in February 2017 by Kris Hilbert at Legitimate Business (Catharsis, Torch Runner, The Body), mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Integrity, Black Breath, Halshug), and completed with artwork by Phil Trona, CENTURIESThe Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding surges with ten new tracks of the band’s harrowing, metallic, punk/crust-influenced hardcore, delivered with a calculated, very deliberate approach.

The band offers, “The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding is a dark album that carries a theme of constant self-doubt. It follows how we choose to accept our loses and the reaction to life, as well as the journey we take to make peace with the demons we’ve made.”

An early single from The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding, the LP’s “Bygones,” is now streaming RIGHT HERE.

Southern Lord will release CENTURIES’ The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding on LP and digital platforms on January 12th, 2018. Stand by for additional audio/video samples from the album, preorder links, and more over the weeks ahead.

CENTURIES will be returning to Europe for the fourth time in Spring 2018, leading with the band’s participation in We Built the World And Miss The Stars Fest V in Berlin, Germany in May. Stand by for further festival and tour details.

SECT Issues “Open Grave” Via Exclaim!; No Cure For Death LP Nears Release Through Southern Lord

North American straightedge/vegan hardcore/crust outfit SECT — featuring scene lifers hailing from Cursed, Left For Dead, Catharsis, Undying, Earth Crisis, The Path Of Resistance, Day Of Suffering, Racetraitor, and more — has issued the devastating “Open Grave,” the lead track their impending second album, No Cure For Death. The new song is now playing at Exclaim! Magazine as the LP nears November release through Southern Lord.

No Cure For Death was recorded with Kurt Ballou at GodCity Studios and mastered by Alan Douches at West West Side Music. SECT vocalist Chris Colohan explains that the new “Open Grave” single is, “a song about how we got to this point in history, how detached from consequence and oblivious to the removal of our most basic mental if not social, political or ecological safety nets we had to become to allow for the assault on reality we’re living out now to succeed. How the bar for what’s acceptable and what’s normalized just drops in free fall while we’re zoned out by the endless barrage of trivial amusements, and the fatal implications of that caliber of apathy not just for the West but civilization across the board.

Exclaim! issues with their premiere of the track, “the metallic hardcore is filthy and sinister, laden with a guitar tone resembling a power tool and with feedback akin to the noise one would make scraping on steel.”

Let SECT’s bleak “Open Grave” out of the casket through Exclaim! at THIS LOCATION.

Southern Lord will release No Cure For Death on CD, LP, and digital formats on November 24th; stand by for preorder links, official videos from the album, and more to be issued in the days ahead, and see recently-issued footage of the No Cure For Death recording sessions at THIS LOCATION.

Comprised of an international cast of scene veterans, who cut their teeth in that formative moment of political, cynical, antagonistic extremes, SECT unites vocalist Chris Colohan (Cursed, Burning Love, Left For Dead), guitarists James Chang (Catharsis, Undying) and Scott Crouse (Earth Crisis, The Path Of Resistance), bassist Steve Hart (Day Of Suffering), and drummer Andy Hurley (Racetraitor, Fall Out Boy, The Damned Things). The result of these musicians’ alignment is a caustic, riotous, belligerent style of vile hardcore fed by a boundless well of socio-political vitriol.

SECT gets right down to the blast beats and breakdowns that fight it out in their chaotic jams. They cut the shit and go for the throat with no time to waste, “because the Orwellian police states and irreparable social and ecological disasters we once saw off on the horizon are now on our front doorsteps, in full swing. And in just such a volatile, precarious moment as this for civilization, there is more reason than ever to keep lashing out at a world more suicidally-bent on its own destruction and the exploitation of people, species and the ecosystem itself, than perhaps ever before in history.”

For SECT, this is the purpose of hardcore as they know it, conveying an urgency that transcends age, credentials or scene politics, to convert desperation into real talk and action.

ALL PIGS MUST DIE: Hostage Animal LP Streaming At Noisey; Album Out October 27th Via Southern Lord + East Coast Shows Begin Tonight

Ahead of its release through Southern Lord October 27th, ALL PIGS MUST DIE‘s bludgeoning new Hostage Animal LP is now streaming at Noisey, as the band kicks off a trio of East Coast shows in Brooklyn tonight.

Four years since the release of their last full-length, ALL PIGS MUST DIE return with Hostage Animal, an album that distills aggressive music to its purest tenets. The band, now a five-piece with the addition of Brian Izzi (Trap Them) on guitar, is comprised of some of the most well-seasoned musicians on the eastern seaboard, with Kevin Baker (The Hope Conspiracy), Ben Koller (Converge), Matt Woods (Bloodhorse), and Adam Wentworth (Bloodhorse). Hostage Animal is their most dynamic collection of work thus far and is an aural representation of the record as a whole; concise, intense, aggressive and carrying a bleak world view.

Listen to ALL PIGS MUST DIE‘s Hostage Animal LP in its entirety, along with a new interview with bassist Matt Woods, today via Noisey RIGHT HERE.

Southern Lord will release Hostage Animal on CD, LP, and all digital formats on October 27th; find physical preorders in the US HERE and Europe HERE.

ALL PIGS MUST DIE has confirmed several new performances coinciding with the release of Hostage Animal, beginning tonight in Brooklyn, with shows in Boston and Providence following over the next two days. Additional tour dates are to be expected in the months ahead.

ALL PIGS MUST DIE Tour Dates:
10/19/2017 Saint Vitus Bar – Brooklyn, NY
10/20/2017 Great Scott – Boston, MA
10/21/2017 AS220 – Providence, RI

ALL PIGS MUST DIE unleashed their first full length in 2011 with God Is War, and the thirty-minute rip was a nod to primeval disdain and anger. Exploring facets of human conflict one track at a time, God Is War introduced the world to a whole new spectrum of rage. In 2013, APMD upped the ante with Nothing Violates This Nature. Honing their craft with more speed and filth, the band pushed their sound closer to the edge of the cliff. Now, in 2017, the band is gearing up for the release of Hostage Animal which, like its predecessors, was recorded at Kurt Ballou’s GodCity Studio. But that is where the similarities end; Hostage Animal ushers in ten new songs that pulverize, gnash, and whirl with the band’s most punishing delivery yet. Hostage Animal showcases that ALL PIGS MUST DIE is far more than the sum of their parts, and their fusion of crust punk, hardcore, and metal is more ferocious than ever before.

MAGMA TO RELEASE RETROSPEKTÏW VOLUME I + II AND III 3LP COLLECTION VIA SOUTHERN LORD, 24 NOVEMBER; GROUP TO APPEAR AT THE SOUTHERN LORD SHOWCASE EVENING IN AMSTERDAM ON 29 OCTOBER

[photo credit: ©Georges Besnier, hi res version available]

MAGMA, one of the most influential of all French bands, are to release Retrospektïẁ 3LP collection, including Volume I + II and Volume III via Southern Lord on the 24th November. Available as a limited pressing of 1500 hand-numbered copies, remastered by Brad Boatright, including original artwork by Eva Nahon, also including the classic comicstrip by Solé, Dister and Gotlib depicting Magma’s trials and tribulations.

Southern Lord and Magma’s collaboration doesn’t end there, as the label have invited the group to perform at their label showcase on 29th of October at the Melkweg in Amsterdam, alongside SUNN O))), Unsane, Circle and more (tickets available and full details here).

Read on for more about the Retrospektïẁ volumes…

The first 10 years of Magma were celebrated on three memorable evenings in June 1980 at the Olympia theatre in Paris. This retrospective, reuniting most of the musicians who had performed in the group, was issued as two albums, Retrospektïẁ 1 / 2 (double) and Retrospektïẁ 3 (single). Issued first, Retrospektïẁ 3 comprises 3 titles Retrovision, a long piece in the style of the album Attahk, in which the vocalists Stella Vander, Guy Khalifa and Maria Popkiewicz turn in a blazing performance over a driving rhythm section; a supercharged version of Hhai, in which the trio Lockwood / Paganotti / Widemann works miracles; and finally La Dawotsin, where, in a more muted register, the voice of Christian Vander triumphs through its mastery and profound sensibility.

Recorded, like Retrospektïẁ 3, during the soirees at Olympia in June 1980, Retrospektïẁ 1 & 2 is an absolutely fundamental album in which Theusz Hamtaahk, the first movement of the trilogy of the same name, is presented for the first time. The second and third movements, Wurdah Itah and Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh, were of course already well known. Although played in concert since 1974, Christian Vander had waited for years before recording it for posterity as he wanted every note to be as beautiful, magical, essential and definitive as possible. It is with the same respect for his music that he releases here the most successful version of Mekanik Destruktiw Komandoh, considered outstanding on account of two incredible improvisations from Bernard Paganotti and Didier Lockwood. Klaus Blasquiz, who did not perform on Retrospektïẁ 3, is the lead vocalist on this version – and justifiably so, since he was indeed the Magma singer who first sang these two masterworks.

There’s no doubt about it, Magma have left a legacy of music that defies any of the standard and convenient classifications of rock, operating instead in a realm of their own creation. Southern Lord looks forward to being part of their ever-evolving story…

LOINCLOTH Issues “Bestial Infernal” Video; Final LP, Psalm Of The Morbid Whore, Out Now Through Southern Lord

Virginia/North Carolina-based instrumental metal ministers LOINCLOTH have issued an official video for “Bestial Infernal”, the track hailing from the outfit’s final LP Psalm Of The Morbid Whore, which was issued last week through Southern Lord.

Packing nine new passages into a half-hour assault, Psalm Of The Morbid Whore‘s white-knuckled twists wrench in one’s gut like a rusted blade. As with their 2012-released Southern Lord debut LP, Iron Balls Of Steel, LOINCLOTH returned to Pershing Hill Sound in Raleigh, North Carolina to record with Greg Elkins, while mastering was handled by Brad Boatright (Sleep, Corrosion Of Conformity, Sunn O))), Obituary) at Audiosiege. Join LOINCLOTH in their final hour of worship.

Worship with LOINCLOTH through “Bestial Infernal” at THIS LOCATION.

Psalm Of The Morbid Whore is streaming in its entirety via Youtube HERE, Bandcamp HERE, and Soundcloud HERE.

Psalm Of The Morbid Whore is out now on Southern Lord; find the vinyl and merch bundles at the Southern Lord webshop HERE, and downloads via Bandcamp HERE.

LOINCLOTH is a culmination of years of worshiping at the altar of the riff. Psalm Of The Morbid Whore arrives with the promise of absolute pummel! Guitarist Tannon Penland and drummer Steve Shelton (Confessor) return with their twisted brand of instrumental metal on the forthcoming Psalm Of The Morbid Whore, this time around also enlisting the infernal hands of Tomas Phillips on bass, who collaborated with Penland in experimental outfit Gauchiste for their self-titled 2012’s release through Little Black Cloud Records. Penland, Shelton, and Phillips were joined by guitarist Craig Hilton who contributed to composition and live sonic assaults on tour with Sunn O))) and more.

Alternative Press published an interview with LOINCLOTH alongside an advance premiere of the single “Ibex (To Burn In Hell Is To Refine),” issuing in part, “The track is unusual for LOINCLOTH because not only is it of epic length (just short of eight minutes on an album where the bulk of tracks never get past three), but it also finds the band experimenting with atmospheric vistas along with their pneumatic tightness.” Within another intense interrogation of the band Noisey describes LOINCLOTH as, “the Southern Lord-backed instrumental quartet who specializes in impenetrably dense acrobatics marked by sinew, economy, and hypercomplex time signatures that consistently avoid baroque frills and cartoonish machismo.”

Svbterranean states, “Keelhaul, Meshuggah and the like are obvious reference points, but LOINCLOTH possess a sound all their own… The band’s sound on this record is a lot less frantic and opts for a more suffocating, rhythmically-jarring approach that locks listeners into a corner and strategically batters them with each and every note. It’s not quite as spastic, but it’s a great deal heavier.” Invisible Oranges offers, “Confessor was great because it sounded like doom metal falling down a flight of stairs, but performed in a calculated manner. LOINCLOTH takes that and ups the speed.

LOINCLOTH: Psalm Of The Morbid Whore, Now Streaming At Noisey; Final LP Sees Release Friday Through Southern Lord

Psalm Of The Morbid Whore, the final call to worship by Virginia/North Carolina-based instrumental metal cult LOINCLOTH, is now streaming in its entirety at Noisey, as the LP is prepared for its official release this Friday through Southern Lord. The advance album stream is joined by an in-depth interrogation with the band.

Packing nine new passages into a half-hour assault on Psalm Of The Morbid Whore, white-knuckled twists wrench in one’s gut like a rusted blade, though the by-the-throat percussive attack and tonal attributes are already enough to suffocate the listener. FRIENDSHIP: Japanese Outfit To Issue Hatred LP Through Southern Lord In October; Tracks Streaming

Southern Lord has teamed up with their cohorts at Japanese label Daymare Recordings for the impending vinyl release of Hatred, the unrelenting debut LP by Japan’s mysterious FRIENDSHIP.

While FRIENDSHIP‘s identity remains an enigma, those who have encountered their antagonistic, loud, and murky sonic world, can testify to the sheer power of the auditory torture the band creates. FRIENDSHIP has previously self-released two CD EPs which sold out in a month since reissued as I & II vinyl and cassette version through Sentient Ruin. For their Hatred LP, the band delivers twelve caustic tracks in just over twenty-five minutes, the album recorded in their home city of Tokyo, the album then mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege.

Originally released by Daymare Recordings on CD and digital formats back in June, Southern Lord will now issue FRIENDSHIP’s Hatred on vinyl October 20th. Blackened, dark, loud, fast, and intense, fans of prior Southern Lord releases by Nails, Heartless, Dead In The Dirt, Gust, and other brutally motivational grinding devastation should pay heed.

Stream FRIENDSHIP‘s “Tortures” and “Life Sentence” HERE; watch for physical preorders in the coming days.

Having shared the stage with the likes of Full Of Hell, Sumac, Endon, and others, and having gained a reputation for extremely loud live shows, FRIENDSHIP will fittingly open for the mighty Sleep in Tokyo in January. Find more info HERE and watch for international tour dates from FRIENDSHIP to be announced in the months ahead.
