JESUS PIECE: Kerrang! Magazine Launches K! Pit Series Stateside With Intimate Live Performance Of Infamous Philadelphia Hardcore Outfit

Philadelphia hardcore outfit JESUS PIECE is the maiden act to perform at the US version of Kerrang! Magazine’s K! Pit series, and the visual evidence of this occurrence is now online.

JESUS PIECE released their acclaimed Only Self LP through Southern Lord in August 2018, the album recorded at Bricktop Recording Studio in Chicago with Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos, Like Rats, Dead In The Dirt), mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Integrity, Nails, Xibalba), and completed with artwork by Dom Pabon. With a smoldering reputation in the underground in their wake, the LP pushed the band into another dimension. One of the year’s most lauded hardcore albums showed up on year-end lists across the board, boundaries be damned. The album has ranked with the year’s heaviest hardcore releases and appeared on year-end lists abroad, including being crowned the #1 hardcore album of 2018 by Stereogum. Surrounding the release of the Only Self LP, JESUS PIECE has toured mercilessly alongside Darkest Hour, Comeback Kid, Burn, Knocked Loose, Terror, Vein, Year Of The Knife, and many more across North America, Europe, and Japan.

Kerrang! Magazine’s stateside staff has launched a US version of the London-based K! Pit series, and its maiden act, was JESUS PIECE. With a limited number of tickets given to fans who took part in an online lottery, a collective of diehards gathered at an undisclosed venue in Brooklyn to watch this metallic hardcore superforce do its thing in an intimate, immersive way, with several local, embedded videographers, as well as an array of mounted cameras, catching the action.

Kerrang! says, “…we decided to move 3,500 miles away to Brooklyn for our first-ever American K! Pit, featuring blistering Philadelphian hardcore upstarts JESUS PIECE. In a storm of grinding riffs and flying limbs, the band blasted their way through the back room of our favorite Brooklyn dive bar, The Gutter, whipping the crowd into an uncontrollable frenzy of spin-kicks and gang vocals that shook the rafters around them.”

See JESUS PIECE and friends in an up-close multi-angle experience RIGHT HERE.

JESUS PIECE is quickly developing a reputation as one of the heaviest, most uncompromising acts both on record and on the stage. With the brutalizing grooves of Disembodied, Turmoil, Harm’s Way, and labelmates Xibalba, the band incorporates elements of noise, ominous tones, and haunting atmospheres into their dynamic songwriting. With crushing, modern production, the eleven new tracks on their Only Self debut LP place JESUS PIECE among the scene’s darkest and heaviest acts.

Only Self is out now on CD, LP, and digital formats through Southern Lord. Find physical order options at the label shop HERE and digital at Bandcamp HERE, iTunes HERE, and through all other digital providers.

Watch for more on JESUS PIECE in the coming weeks.

BIG|BRAVE Announces Fourth LP, A Gaze Among Them, Set For Release Via Southern Lord May 10th; Trailer, Album Details, And Tour Dates Posted

BIG|BRAVE has announced their incoming fourth LP, A Gaze Among Them, set for release May 10th through Southern Lord. A brief trailer for the album, as well as its cover art and other details have been revealed. The band has also posted North American and European spring tour dates supporting the album.

Since their inception in 2012, BIG|BRAVE has explored terrains of experimental rock with a clear focus on the key principles; space, volume, and raw emotion. The essence of BIG|BRAVE‘s magic has always been the way they balance these dynamics, and particularly how much sheer power comes from the beautifully quiet moments.

A Gaze Among Them features Robin Wattie (vocals, electric guitar, guitar amp, bass amp), Mathieu Ball (electric guitar, guitar amps), and Loel Campbell (drums) with guest appearances from Thierry Amar (Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Thee Silver Mt Zion) on Contrabass and Seth Manchester’s synth overdubs. The album was recorded with Seth Manchester at Machine with Magnets in Pawtucket Rhode Island. The beautiful image adorning the cover, created by Wattie, further demonstrates how BIG|BRAVE has blossomed. The trio sounds rejuvenated and confident, and A Gaze Among Them is the sound of a band truly honing their craft and feeling totally satisfied with it. Compelling. Necessary. Important.

The same principles are the starting point for BIG|BRAVE‘s new album, only the approach is different, beginning with the question, “How do we take very little and make something bigger than what we actually have?” Vocalist/guitarist Robin Wattie explains further: “The biggest challenge was to not do what is easiest. i.e. what we knew worked for the last albums or what is, for us; easy to write. With A Gaze Among Them, Mathieu and I put ourselves through the ringer – I did not want to do what seemed to me to be a ‘logical next step’ in what we could do musically. I wanted to go back to our original concepts and work from there – space, tension, minimalism, and voice (finding melody and musicality in pieces that consist of one note for longer than ten minutes, for example) were the primary concentrations I wanted to push.”

In the process of revisiting their early intentions, BIG|BRAVE has boldly evolved, emerging with a thrilling new body of work that is all at once refreshingly new, explosively heavy, dynamically loud, beautifully minimal, carefully repetitive, and utterly cathartic.

See a brief trailer for BIG|BRAVE’s A Gaze Among Them RIGHT HERE.

Look for A Gaze Among Them to be available May 10th via Southern Lord; preorders will be available shortly.

A Gaze Among Them Track Listing:

  1. Muted Shifting Of Space
  2. Holding Pattern
  3. Body Individual
  4. This Deafening Verity
  5. Sibling

BIG|BRAVE are big and oceanic, their music flowing and crashing like waves…Robin Wattie’s clear, piercing vocals, which occupy an emotional zone right at the point between ecstasy and abject despair.” – Pitchfork

BIG|BRAVE have somehow made a ruthlessly loud record that is also fascinating, and consistently elegant.” – Drowned In Sound

PELICAN To Release Midnight And Mescaline 7″, Band’s First New Music In Six Years, As Record Store Day Exclusive; June Tour With Cloakroom Booked + Remixed & Remastered Version Of Forever Becoming LP Out Now

PELICAN, the instrumental quartet whose singular vision of heavy music eschews classification, is set to release their first new music in six years via a two-song 7″ on Southern Lord coming as an indie exclusive on Record Store Day (April 13th, 2019 #RSD2019). The band’s penchant for commanding live performances will be apparent when they head out for a run of US tour dates this June, accompanied by Midwestern masters of thunderous slowgaze Cloakroom.

Channeling the visceral intensity of their live shows, PELICAN‘s “Midnight And Mescaline” is an unrelenting riff marathon, careening from eviscerating heaviness to metal-infused fretboard frenetics to cathartic melody in a compact five-minute sprint. Paired with B-side “Darkness On The Stairs,” the new release taps into the band member’s shared roots in the late ’90s DIY music scene, reinvigorating the quartet with impassioned punk ferocity.

In conjunction with the 7″ and tour announce, Southern Lord has just digitally released a deluxe reissue of the quartet’s 2013 album Forever Becoming, featuring vastly improved mix and mastering of the original songs replete with a revised version of the previously Japan-only bonus track “Bardo.” Initially recorded by Chris Common under optimal conditions at Chicago’s Electrical Audio, Forever Becoming was mixed in less-than-ideal circumstances at a makeshift studio in Los Angeles, yielding mixes that varnished the incredible tones generated during tracking. When the subject of a vinyl repress came up, Common, now helming his own proper studio, asked for another crack at mixing the album. The result brings a new level of low-end depth, atmospheric clarity, and tight, punchy heaviness to the album. Vinyl pre-orders are coming soon and is available from all digital retailers and streaming services now.

Listen to PELICAN’s remixed/remastered Forever Becoming reissue at THIS LOCATION and watch the “Deny The Absolute” video from the reissue HERE.

Across almost twenty years, five full-lengths, seven EPs, and hundreds of live shows, PELICAN has cultivated a chemistry that borders on telepathy, catapulting the band from basement shows in their native Chicago to outlier appearances at international music festivals including Primavera, Roskilde, Pitchfork, Bonnaroo, Roadburn, and Maryland Deathfest, and headlining tours across four continents.

Watch for additional tour dates and music announcements from PELICAN to be posted shortly.

OKKULTOKRATI ANNOUNCE LIVE DATES IN SWEDEN AND DENMARK; BAND CURRENTLY WORKING ON A NEW ALBUM

Norwegian rockers Okkultokrati reveal a trio of live dates on the horizon in Sweden and Denmark, where they shall be road testing new material that they are currently working on. Their previous acclaimed album Raspberry Dawn was released via Southern Lord in 2016 – more on that album below.

OKKULTOKRATI LIVE DATES:
February 14: Gothenburg @ Musikens Hus
February 15: Aalborg @ 1000Fryd
February 16: Copenhagen @ Musikcafeen

More info on Raspberry Dawn below…
While paying homage to their native 1990s black metal heritage, the cinematic synth/goth rock of the prior decade, and the raging early punk movement ahead of that, Okkultokrati still manages to create sincerely original and infectious music through every bar of Raspberry Dawn, resulting in a starkly raw and original sounding album.

STREAM OKKULTOKRATI’S RASPBERRY DAWN

On Raspberry Dawn, Okkultokrati thrusts the heretic rock and roll that they have cultivated since their 2008 inception into more extraordinary situations. Classic ‘70s riffing, snotty punk, and brash, old-school metal are inventively mixed with pulses and spikes of darkwave and ice cold, psychedelic repetition. They execute these infectious tunes effortlessly, playing with the attitude they retained from their roots in rural hard rock attitude, and busting a propulsive stomp that aligns them closer to the clarity of recordings from decades past, also exemplified by spring reverb twangs that ping across the mix like rubber bands. With organ touches, violent slaps of static, and blown out sci-fi overtures backed by the band’s preexisting taste for the curious and the macabre, amping-up both the drama and the feel-good extremes that they have always lathered their sound in, Raspberry Dawn is weird, wired, and quite possibly the holy grail for those looking for radical rock reinvention and new sensations in the current era.

PRAISE FOR RASPBERRY DAWN:
“Norway’s Okkultokrati takes the age-old black metal imprint of snarling Venom-style vocals and general nihilism, and updates the proceedings with fresh approaches that employ punk, hardcore, death metal, goth and much more. The new record is more evolution for the band, as the general doom and gloom has been replaced by almost sunny (but still chainsaw-like) riffs and more melody. Imagine Motörhead at their beer-raising fun best, but with synths, occasional piano, and more, then you may have the idea…” – CLRVYNT

“The song (Hard To Please, Easy To Kill) offers nostalgia for those who went through a powerful goth phase in high school, while offering a vision into an alternate timeline when the ‘80s never ended, only got weirder. It must be heard to be believed…” – INVISIBLE ORANGES

“If you were to lock Ian Curtis, Robert Smith, Mat McNerney and Fenriz in a recording studio for 24 hours then this would likely be the musical fallout.” – AVE NOCTUM

“Raspberry Dawn carries such a manic energy and flamboyant disregard for what’s expected of it that it is arguably both the most interesting and defiantly punk rock statement the band has made thus far.” – THE QUIETUS

“Commendably individual, and coated in a dirty film of fuzz.” – TERRORIZER

SUNN O))) Announces New Album And US Tour Dates In April; Life Metal Trailer Now Playing

SUNN O))) is pleased to present Life Metal, their first new studio album in four years, due for release on Southern Lord Recordings in April 2019. The album will be supported by their first US tour since 2017 and the premier US tour of their 2019-2020 season, including stops at The Masonic Lodge in Detroit, Howard Theatre in Washington, DC, Agora Theatre in Cleveland, Rockefeller Chapel in Chicago, The Caves in Pelham, and Brooklyn Steel in Brooklyn. Dates and details can be found below, with more info to surface soon.

Read a new interview with SUNN O))) and watch the Life Metal teaser now via Stereogum HERE.

At the very beginning of 2018, SUNN O))) co-founders Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson set out on a path toward a new album production. They were both determined to create new music and a new method of working in the studio, without forgetting the long and proud history of production and studio accomplishments forged during their first two decades of existence, and the members’ own musical experiences out of the bands. One long term goal was completely clear: to record SUNN O))) with Steve Albini in his Electrical Audio studio. Albini took the call, said “Sure, this will be fun. I have no idea what is going to happen.”

Anderson and O’Malley gathered twice that spring for writing, conceptualizing, and riff woodshedding in the very building where the band was formed: Downtown Rehearsal in Los Angeles. Sonic cosmoses, flashes of abstract color (synthetic and objective), and themes emerged from the mastered depths of saturation and circuits between the two players and their mountains of gear. Themes developed in terms of brightness and energy, while visionary cues pointed toward subconscious areas of practice and the pair realized they were exploring other zones of consciousness via sound/time and sound/energy manipulation. In early summer, a pre-production session with full backline, as a trio with T.O.S. on Moog, was recorded at Dave Grohl’s 606 studios, Northridge, California.

In July 2018, SUNN O))) spent just over two weeks in Chicago at Electrical Audio (Studio A) with Albini at the helm. The results are astounding: there is breadth and luminosity of color, it sounds vast. The sessions were impeccably recorded, authentically represented, and completely accurate. The spectrum cracked the firmament open in clarity. An all analogue technique was used, they recorded and mixed on tape, providing a creative gateway for SUNN O))) to evolve their production methods into stronger, confident, performance based and a more logical executive process. The album was mastered and lacquers cut from tape in October by SUNN O))) ally Matt Colton at Alchemy in London. The LP version is a AAA album, recorded and mixed on tape via a completely analogue production, from the input of the band’s amplifiers and the air coming off the speakers in front of the microphones to needle touching the pressed vinyl on your turntable.

Continuing one of the main currents of the SUNN O))) concept, depth of exploration within collaboration, brought forth Hildur Guðnadóttir to the SUNN O))) constellation. Guðnadóttir has performed as a live collaborator of SUNN O))) and a renowned film music composer, as well as a former member of the bands Múm, Pan Sonic, and Angel. She was a longtime collaborator with the composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (RIP). Guðnadóttir lent her incredible attitude, as well as her voice, breath and electric cello, and the enigmatic haldorophone to the proceedings, culminating in the epic composition/concerto “Novæ.” The cosmos clearly expands.

Tim Midyett, a close friend of Anderson and O’Malley since the Seattle days of the early ’90s, and member of Silkworm, Bottomless Pit, and Mint Mile, joined in a foundational role tying earth to sound with wicked performances on aluminum neck bass and baritone guitars: instruments he helped pioneer playing back in the ’90s alongside Steve and Shellac of course. Dark matter is reality.

Prolific new music composer Anthony Pateras arranged and recorded an incredible contribution of pipe organ for a piece titled “Troubled Air” (titled after an essay by author Aliza Shvarts, who also penned the liner notes for SUNN O)))’s Kannon LP), at Schlosskappelle, Schloss Solitude, Stuttgart. String theory of space.

The resulting album is titled Life Metal. It is fully realized and completely real. The record was produced by the core of O’Malley and Anderson and arranged by the greater constellation SUNN O))). Paintings by visual artist Samantha Keely Smith graciously adorn the sleeve and provide a perfect suitable mask to the proceedings. They collide ideas of 19th century romanticism and late 20th abstract expressionism (mysticism) with SUNN O)))‘s approach to metal (via reference points of Arbo, Turner, Delville, Richter, Turrel, Wou-Ki). Photographer Ronald Dick shot them in baths of light color representing depth of sound pressure in the work.

Life Metal Track Listing:

  1. Between Sleipnir’s Breaths
  2. Troubled Air

CASPAR BRÖTZMANN is one of the most unique and innovative guitarists of the last forty years. With his Berlin-based trio MASSAKER, he evolved a whole new autonomous approach to writing rock songs, starting from sounds that were widely considered ornamental if not detrimental “sonic waste” such as shrieking feedback and droning overtones. This plethora of sounds were arranged into tracks to sound like breaking concrete, grinding metal, or bursting glass, at once monumental and threatening, impenetrable and hermetic, yet also archaically tender and loving.

Even today, as the art of noise has reached a level of sophistication that no one could have imagined thirty years ago, CASPAR BRÖTZMANNMASSAKER‘s music is resoundingly singular. Ultra-heavy riffs and beats, ominous tribal chants, and a raw physical force is conjured up by these three sinister and proud minds of their era. Their unhinged, unified stream of energy is captured on these remastered reissues and the results are thrilling.

Born in 1962 in a post-war divided Germany, CASPAR BRÖTZMANN started out playing the piano, his main inspirations included, Hanns Eisler, singer Ernst Busch, his mother’s “Hausmusik” (German tradition where the family gathers to play their instruments together), and also by the roaring sounds of his father, a virtuoso saxophonist aka “The Teutonic Axe” – a key player in the European free jazz movement, Fluxus artist, and ideologically adamant communist. CASPAR lived in fear and awe of his strict father, and he took to the guitar knowing that his father and his peers sneered at Americanized music, and especially electric guitars and the hard rock sounds that appealed to him, the likes of Ritchie Blackmore, Jimmy Page, and Jimi Hendrix. The guitar became, CASPAR says, “his shield against the unsettling world,” also noting, “It wasn’t about virtuosity, rather the love of the instrument.”

BRÖTZMANN didn’t have any formal training, but Hans Reichel — a family friend and an avant-garde guitarist who built his own instruments — showed him the ropes. Hans taught him how to manipulate the workings and mechanics of the guitar. CASPAR‘s left-handed instrument is less of a nod to left-handed Hendrix and more of a technical improvement to his own playing, allowing for a stronger low end, better access to the volume control, and the vibrato bar, all of which gives CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER‘s music an unparalleled dynamic range.

The Tribe was CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER‘s first album. Recorded at Jost Gebers’ legendary jazz studio FMP in Berlin. To Gebers, who was far from being a fan of amplified music, BRÖTZMANN recalls, MASSAKER‘s music sounded “honest”. The iconic sleeve was designed by CASPAR BRÖTZMANN‘s father. Prior to this record, CASPAR honed his craft as a solo artist opening for the likes of Nick Cave. It is now reissued as it was originally released, remastered for LP and CD.

MASSAKER lineup for The Tribe:
Caspar Brötzmann – guitars/vocals
Eduardo Delgado Lopez – bass
Jon – drums

Julian Cope once stated that CASPAR BRÖTZMANN MASSAKER was, “The trio to end all power trios.” Like The Tribe, Black Axis was recorded at Jost Gebers’ FMP tudios in Berlin. Black Axis came to life in a rehearsal room so small with a ceiling so low that BRÖTZMANN, at nearly six-and-a-half feet tall, could barely stand up straight. The artwork was created by Brötzmann himself. The album is here reissued as it was originally release, remastered for 2xLP and CD.

MASSAKER lineup for Black Axis:
Caspar Brötzmann – guitars/vocals
Eduardo Delgado Lopez – bass
Frank Neumeier – Drums
