ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF Presents Solo Instrumental Pipe Organ Album All Thoughts Fly, Confirmed For September Release Through Southern Lord; “Sacro Bosco” Video Playing

Watch ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF’s “Sacro Bosco” video HERE.

“Sacro Bosco” is the starting point for ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF‘s new album All Thoughts Fly, incoming on Southern Lord on September 25th. Here, in solo instrumental mode, the entire record consists of just one instrument, the pipe organ, and represents absolute liberation of the imagination. All Thoughts Fly radiates a melancholic beauty and is distinguished by fluid transitions of contrasting elements; calmness and drama, harmony and dissonance, much like the place that inspires the music.

Sacro Bosco (“Sacred Grove”) is a garden, based in Bomarzo in the center of Italy, containing grotesque mythological sculptures and buildings overgrown with vegetation, situated in a wooded valley beneath the castle of Orsini. Created during the 16th Century, Sacro Bosco was commissioned by Pier Francesco Orsini, some say to try and cope with his grief following the death of his wife Guilia Farnese, others speculate the purpose was to create art.

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF explains, “There’s a sadness and wilderness that inspired me to write this album, also a timelessness. I believe that this park has survived not only due to its beauty but also because of the iconography, it has been liberated from predictable ideas and ideals. The people who built this park truly set their minds and imagination free. All thoughts fly is a homage to this creation, and an effort to articulate the atmosphere and the feelings that this place evokes inside of me. It’s a very personal interpretation of a place that I lack the words to describe. I’d like to believe Orsini built this monumental park out of grief for his dead wife, and in my ‘Sacro Bosco’ I used this story as a core for my own inspiration: love as a foundation for creation.”

The accompanying video for the first single “Sacro Bosco” is, just like the music, an interpretation of the park with an imaginary twist. The stunning video was directed by Gustaf and Ludvig Holtenäs.

Anna summarizes, “Sacro Bosco in Bomarzo is a creation carved out from one man’s head. A frozen thought lasting throughout time and touching people across generations. All thoughts fly, Ogni Pensiero Vola, is about this: the importance of sharing for surviving, creating space and evolving. Once you’ve shared your words, they are not only yours anymore.”

See ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF’s “Sacro Bosco” official video at THIS LOCATION.

The song is also available to listen via SpotifyBandcamp, and iTunes.

Anna von Hausswolff – Sacro Bosco

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF‘s All Thoughts Fly ultimately embodies the exploration of any and all possibilities, and the audience is invited to listen, liberate the mind and let it wander.

Southern Lord will release All Thoughts Fly on LP and digital formats on September 25th. Digital preorders are now available at Bandcamp HERE.

The organ on All Thoughts Fly is situated in Gothenburg and is a Swedish replica of the Arp Schnitger organ in Germany. It is the largest organ tuned in Quarter-comma Meantone temperament in the world. With its four manuals, one pedal and fifty-four stops, it was built as part of a ten-year research project reconstructing 17th Century North German organ building craft. The tuning temperament is an important detail to note here, as it deeply affects the sound and tuning, and thus radically changed the process of creating this album. Anna speaks of a pleasant surprise during recording, the organ’s ability to create beautiful “pitching” notes through its stops and air supply system. VON HAUSSWOLFFremarks, “We took advantage of this so most of the pitching sounds and notes that you hear on the album comes from the mechanics of this organ, effects made entirely acoustically.” The organ was recorded with two room mics for atmosphere and two pairs of close mics placed inside the organ to capture nuances and detail for further organ sound processing by Filip Leyman in his studio.

All Thoughts Fly was recorded in seven days in January 2020, the songs were written in 2019 and 2020. With organ sound design by Filip Leyman and ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF, who also produced and mixed the album, All Thoughts Fly was recorded in Örgryte New Church, in Gothenburg January 2020, performed on their Quarter-comma Meantone tempered North German Baroque organ. The record was recorded with mobile equipment from Svenska Grammofonstudion and mastered by Hans Olsson at Svenska Grammofonstudion. The album is completed with cover and inner sleeve photography by Gianluca Grasselli, and layout and design by Tina Damgaard.

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF is a musician and composer exploring the myriad of possibilities and the potential for new expressions on the pipe organ. Anna has performed on pipe organs all over the world, as part of this ongoing quest of discovery. Her polyrhythmic sound is ever-changing and full of contrasts, often distinguished by fluid transitions of calmness and drama, harmony and dissonance, with various overlapping elements. Her imaginative approach is open-minded to sonic possibilities and different perceptions, drawing inspiration from wherever it may appear.

The artists has written and released four full-length albums: Singing From The Grave (2010), Ceremony(2012), The Miraculous (2015), and Dead Magic (2018), often recording with a cast of other musicians. Her forthcoming release, All Thoughts Fly sees her in solo instrumental mode.

ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF has recently toured the UK with Sunn O))), and was a guest performer on their live session for Mary Anne Hobbs airing on BBC 6 Music, and has supported Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, Swans, Efterklang, and Refused, to name a few. Anna was invited by Nils Frahm to perform his curated event Possibly Colliding at the Barbican, London and by David Byrne to perform at his curated Meltdown festival at Southbank centre, London. Other key live appearances include performances at Primavera festival, Roadburn, Roskilde festival, Aural Festival in Mexico City, End Of The Road, Green Man Festival, Way Out West, MONA FOMA Australia, and more.

As a spirited collaborator, ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF has worked with Swans (guesting on their album Leaving Meaning), Yann Tiersen (guesting on his album All), and Wolves In The Throne Room (guesting on Thrice Woven). She notably performed at the Nobel Prize Dinner (2018) with material written in collaboration Swedish composer Mikael Karlsson. In the same year, Anna performed as a solo vocalist in Alexander Ekman’s ballet “Midsummer Night’s Dream” with music written by Mikael Karlsson. Anna has written theatre music for “Gösta Berlings Saga” a play by Rikard Lekander (2017).

A restless creative, ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF owns and runs Pomperipossa Records, with several small and experimental releases, that often sell out quickly. Anna also plays in BADA who released their self-titled album earlier this year, and is one half of Hydras Dream, a collaboration with Matti Bye (Swedish pianist and composer for film, TV, theatre and dance) who released the album The Little Match Girl (2014).

As an enthusiast of visual arts, ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF has a Bachelor’s Degree in Contemporary Art, studied a masters in music and contemporary art at the Royal Academy of Arts in Copenhagen, and Printmaking at Gothenburg Art School. In late 2019, Anna combined her passion for pipe organs and appreciation of visual arts when hosting her first ever large-scale solo exhibition at Galleri Backlund, Sweden. The work on display was images of imaginary pipe organs, visualized on copperplate engravings, made through various techniques.

Always embracing ambitious undertakings, ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF is currently working on film music for a documentary produced by Swedish television, due to premiere either late 2020 or in 2021. A process which inspired her compositional approach on All Thoughts Fly.

Watch for additional audio previews, physical preorders, and more to post in the weeks ahead. Review copies of All Thoughts Fly will be made available very soon. For coverage of ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF in North America contact dave@earsplitcompound.com and in Europe contact lauren@rarelyunable.com.

ENTRY: BrooklynVegan Streams Entire Detriment Debut LP By From Los Angeles Hardcore Punk Outfit; Album Sees Release Friday Through Southern Lord

Stream ENTRY’s Detriment HERE.

Los Angeles hardcore punk quartet ENTRY‘s debut album, Detriment, sees release through Southern Lord this Friday, and BrooklynVegan is now hosting the entire album for advance streaming.

Compact and ferocious, Detriment is a diverse album and a breath of fresh air in the genre. The debut showcases ENTRY‘s appreciation for different aspects of punk and hardcore, and their imaginative songwriting that is condensed into nine succinct musical statements of intent. As a collective, ENTRYfirmly believes in the power of punk and the uniting nature of music, and with Detriment, they reflect themselves and their community with integrity and authenticity.

The band offers, “We’re extremely proud to share with you our debut LP, Detriment. Each track represents a detriment to ourselves and our society. Learning to deal with the past while also coping with the horrendous political climate constantly surrounding us. Thanks to the team at Southern Lord for helping realize our vision.”

BrooklynVegan writes, “The band cite such influences as Discharge, Minor Threat, Converge, Tragedy, The Cramps, and The Exploited, and you can definitely hear that kind of stuff coming through in their dark, heavy, whiplash-inducing hardcore. Just about every song is a D-beating ripper, until album closer ‘Demons,’ which is about twice as long as every other song on this LP and finds ENTRY diving into murky sludge. It’s the perfect vessel for the rage and despair that vocalist Sara G delivers with pure venom.”

Stream ENTRY’s Detriment early only through BrooklynVegan at THIS LOCATION.

Detriment was recorded in Los Angeles by ENTRY‘s Sean Sakamoto and Christopher Dwyer, mixed by Christopher Dwyer, and mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios. The album is completed with photography by Katie Krulock and layout by Emma Maatman.Southern Lord will release Detriment on vinyl and digital formats this Friday, July 17th through Bandcamp HERE, the label’s US webshop HERE, and the Euro webshop HERE

ENTRY started as a project between Sara G and Clayton Stevens inspired by the likes of Discharge, Minor Threat, Converge, Tragedy, The Cramps, and The Exploited. The punk community at large is as inspiring as it has ever been to them. Bassist Sean Sakamoto plays in the indie pop band Sheer and is a recording engineer in Los Angeles, where drummer Chris Dwyer is also a recording engineer. Sara’s musical origins come from punk bands in Pennsylvania, and Clayton also continues to play guitar in Touché Amoré on Epitaph Records. The band has played the Olympia Hardcore Festival, and Ceremony’s Homesick Festival in Los Angeles, and has opened for bands like Career Suicide, Krimewatch, Sunn O))), Dangers, Despise You, Sect, and Show Me The Body.

ENGINE KID: Southern Lord Releases Remastered Versions Of Bear Catching Fish And Angel Wings Digitally At Bandcamp; Proceeds To Benefit Midnight Mission

Almost thirty years since the inception of ENGINE KID, and the trio finds themselves comprehending the enormity of their creation, honoring and celebrating the mountains they formed and the canyons they created, as both of their full-length albums, Bear Catching Fish and Angel Wings, have been remastered for re-release this week via Southern Lord.

Having both been fitted with updated cover artwork, and remastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (From Ashes Rise, Obituary, Nails, Jesus Piece) for maximum sonic enhancement, Southern Lord brings the Bear Catching Fish and Angel Wings albums to the fore as part of Bandcamp day. Both records have been offered on a “pay what you want” basis and all proceeds will be donated to the Los Angeles-based homeless shelter Midnight Mission, to honor the original drummer Chris Vandebrooke, who was murdered near a homeless encampment by the LA River/Griffith Park in 2016.

Find ENGINE KID’s remastered Bear Catching Fish and Angel Wings albums at Bandcamp RIGHT HERE.

ENGINE KID was born in Seattle, Washington in 1991. The band’s original lineup consisted of guitarist/vocalist Greg Anderson (Southern Lord, Sunn O))), Thorrs Hammer, Goatsnake), drummer Chris Vandebrooke, and bassist Art Behrman. The three had all been in hardcore/punk bands around town and all had a burning desire to create a sound that was unlike anything they had done in the past. After just a few months of existence, they quickly recorded and self-released the Novocaine 7″. Circa 1992, close friend and bassist Brian Kraft (Krafty) replaced Behrman, and at that moment the entire aesthetic and execution of sound became heavier, darker, and extremely dynamic. The power trio was picked up by local label C/Z records and set out upon recording the new music they were quickly creating. In 1993 the band had two releases on C/Z. Their first offering was the Astronaut five-song EP recorded by John Goodmanson. The songs were primitive and exemplified the bands worship of Slint and their loud/quiet song dynamic. In the Summer of 1993, the band drove all the way to Chicago to record with their hero Steve Albini in the basement of his house. They emerged with the eight-song album they called Bear Catching Fish. Albini intuitively captured the band exactly as they were at that moment: raw, vulnerable, and mammoth.

Shortly after the album’s release, Jade Devitt replaced Vandebrooke on drums. This transition was extremely crucial in the “second phase” of the group. Devitt was an absolute beast and his power helped launch the band miles beyond where they had ever been before. The sound of “The Kid” started to transform into a sound much more of their own. The three dudes were hellbent on pushing the bounds of sonic exploration to its absolute fullest. Suddenly there was an abundance of depth within the sounds they were creating. Eclectic influences of punk/hardcore (Black Flag, Die Kreuzen), metal (Entombed, Carcass), and even jazz (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Miles Davis’ electric era) were in a full collision course with the already dynamically heavy foundation of the band. The levee had broken, and the resulting flood of sound completely saturated everything in its path.

ENGINE KID toured relentlessly. They were constantly on the road playing every nook and cranny they possibly could. Any moment not spent on the road was instead spent focused on making their new material as potent as possible. Early in 1994, the band decided to pay homage to their mutual love of jazz/fusion and recorded three instrumental pieces that would become a split album with like-minded powerhouse Iceburn. The split album showcased each group’s love of jazz loosely framed by the intense enthusiasm of underground music and saw release through Revelation Records later that year.

During the summer of 1994, the band reconvened with producer John Goodmanson at Bad Animals and AVAST! Studios to record the new material that was literally bleeding out of the reinvigorated trio. These recorded songs were much more progressive, heavier, harder and more focused than past works. They even tackled John Coltrane’s Olé Coltrane, adding saxophone and trumpet from their brothers in Silkworm. In March of 1995, Revelation records released these recordings as the Angel Wings album. Unfortunately, “The Kid” flew too close to the sun and broke up very shortly after the album’s release.

Watch for updates to be issued in the coming months.

HIGH COMMAND: Metal Injection Debuts “Merciless Steel” Video; Beyond The Wall Of Desolation LP Out Now On Southern Lord

See HIGH COMMAND’s “Merciless Steel” HERE.

Worcester, Massachusetts-based HIGH COMMAND has just issued an official video for “Merciless Steel,” one of the most searing tracks from the band’s Southern Lord-released debut LP, Beyond The Wall Of Desolation.

Released in the Summer of 2019, HIGH COMMAND‘s Beyond The Wall Of Desolation delivers an onslaught of searing thrash/hardcore aggression. The band’s ravenous delivery is magnified by the powerful recording courtesy of Machines With Magnets (Daughters, The Body, Lingua Ignota), and mastering by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Obituary, Integrity, Black Breath).

urrounding the album’s release, HIGH COMMAND torched sectors of the country on tour with the likes of Spirit Adrift, Enforced, and more, and Spring 2020 saw them lined up to tour alongside Ringworm and others when the COVID-19 outbreak halted all plans.

Writes HIGH COMMAND‘s Ryan McCardle, “We had been planning on doing a big production metal video with swords and the like before the pandemic hit, but then we started going through all the footage we had collected from our first couple tours supporting Beyond The Wall Of Desolation and we realized we had all this great video of a time that seems almost alien and long ago considering the current state of affairs. Meticulously edited and directed by visual madman Chris O’Coin, the ‘Merciless Steel’ video is our ode to a community that was of the utmost importance to us and we hope returns someday soon.”

Metal Injection writes with their premiere of the video, “HIGH COMMAND released their thrash-mad album Beyond The Wall Of Desolation in 2019. If you missed it, or you’re looking for some skull-splitting riffs alongside a music video that looks like an old VHS, then you need ‘Merciless Steel’ in your life right now.”

Watch HIGH COMMAND’s “Merciless Steel” at Metal Injection RIGHT HERE.

Beyond The Wall Of Desolation is available on CD, LP, and digital via Bandcamp HERE and the Southern Lord webshop HERE.

Watch for new tour dates to be announced over the months ahead pending the reopening of venues and the return of live music around the country.

Los Angeles, California-based hardcore punk band ENTRY will release their debut full-length, Detriment, through Southern Lord Recordings on July 17th. The lead single “Your Best Interest” is now playing exclusively at New Noise Magazine.

The follow-up to their sold-out No Relief 7″ released on Dune Altar, ENTRY‘s Detriment LP is succinct and ferocious. Detriment is a diverse album which provides a breath of fresh air to the genre. The album showcases ENTRY‘s appreciation for different aspects of punk and hardcore, and their imaginative songwriting that is condensed into nine concise musical statements of intent.

They embody many of the characteristics of powerful underground music that I have been obsessed with since my youth!”

ENTRY‘s vocalist Sara Gregory writes with the premiere of “Your Best Interest,” Detriment‘s lead single, “This is the first song on the record. It’s about how people are treated unfairly by the legal system and are unable to receive effective assistance because they lack resources.”

Hear ENTRY’s “Your Best Interest” first through New Noise Magazine at THIS LOCATION.

Southern Lord will release Detriment on vinyl and digital formats on July 17th; digital preorders post this week. Watch for additional audio previews of the record to post in the weeks ahead.

Inspired by the likes of Discharge, Minor Threat, Converge, Tragedy, The Cramps, and The Exploited, ENTRY started as a project between Sara Gregory – whose musical origins come from punk bands in Pennsylvania – and Clayton Stevens, who also plays guitar in Touché Amoré on Epitaph Records. Bass player Sean Sakamoto plays in the indie pop band Sheer and is a recording engineer in Los Angeles, while drummer Chris Dwyer is also a recording engineer in LA. The punk community at large is as inspiring as it has ever been to them.

ENTRY has played the Olympia Hardcore Festival, and Ceremony’s Homesick Festival in Los Angeles, and has opened Career Suicide, Krimewatch, Sunn O))), Dangers, Despise You, Sect, and Show Me The Body, and many others.
