“The heaviness of their music resists falling into stoner/sludge mode, but there is huge weight attached to them that, when it hits, is a flooring experience…A Gaze Among Them has the power to crush and caress in equal measures.” – 4* RECORD COLLECTOR

“Their fourth full length is as sparse and explorative as ever, but it’s rendered this time in accessible technicolour…A Gaze Among Them remains steadfastly bold…This newfound confidence suits vocalist/guitarist Robin Wattie, her voice sounding by turns otherworldly, and toweringly defiant, BIG| BRAVE have turned sonic minimalism into a kaleidoscopic experience that becomes increasingly compulsive with each listen.” – 8/10 METAL HAMMER

“a work of shattering weight and magnificence. The fight to be objective about Big|Brave is futile; this band will touch and disturb you like no other, in ways you never thought you could be. Forget classic of its genre: A Gaze Among Them is a classic of its time.” – 9/10 GHOST CULT

“Big | Brave sound utterly unique, like they’ve passed through a secret aperture into territory as yet unexplored by others” – 4.5/5 MUSIC OMH

“A Gaze Among Them is a precious album of truly beautiful aural elation which should be enough to lift the heaviest of hearts.” – 8/10, THE 405

“The quest that DARKEST HOUR, the DC melodeath warriors, have been on for more than two decades is one that is wholly about tearing faces off with precision, intent, and riffs. The band’s most recent album, last year’s great Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora, showcased them knowing exactly what kind of music they wanted to make and how to make it.” – Noisey

“This album is full of death metal riffs, savage hardcore pummeling in drums, and melodic beauty, making for a terrific heavy record. Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora is a work that feels like the good ole days of outstanding hardcore that meets today’s brilliant technicality and soaring metal. This is unlike anything that DARKEST HOUR has presented before in their discography, and dare I say it: their best work. 9.5/10″ – Metal Injection

“As rich and ferocious as it is blessedly authentic…a freshly bloodthirsty DARKEST HOUR with a gritty edge and a fretwork at the forefront…With some of the band’s early spirit restored, some newly memorable songwriting skills, and superbly euphoric guitarwork, it would seem that DARKEST HOUR plus Kurt Ballou plus Kris Norris is as killer a formula as expected.” – Metal Hammer

“They’re firmly back on the horse here with a collection of acerbic aural hand grenades…the quintet set about ripping you limb from limb from the outset…A ripper.” – Rock Sound

THE WRAITH: Kerrang! Premieres “Wing Of Night” Video; Gloom Ballet Debut LP By Los Angeles Dark Punk Act Out Now On Southern Lord

Los Angeles, California-based dark punk outfit THE WRAITH presents the first official video from their debut LP, Gloom Ballet, which saw worldwide release last week through Southern Lord. The album’s maiden video, created for the track “Wing Of Night,” now makes its public debut through a premiere hosted by Kerrang! Magazine.

Directed, shot, and edited by Alisa Akay, the “Wing Of Night” video’s concept juxtaposes imagery reflecting the song’s lyrical themes – the embrace of pain, struggle, darkness, and inevitable (yet not truly final) death – with footage of THE WRAITH‘s lauded live performance, centered around frenetic frontman/poet Davey Bales. The band filmed the video over two days in a historic haunted theater in North Hollywood, just around the corner from producer Mat Mitchell’s studio where they recorded Gloom Ballet almost exactly a year prior. The band was keen to work with director Alisa Akay because, as Mitchell’s fiancée, she was intimately familiar with their music.

“Alisa would often drop by the studio during the Gloom Ballet sessions, and she later worked on some of Davey’s poetry videos,” offers bassist Paul Rogers. “So, she really gets our sound and vibe, and we loved her vision for the video.”

The video’s opening séance – conducted by The Wraith’s spiritual guide, psychic-medium Tiffany Retrozombie – was more real than intended: “Every time I closed my eyes I saw a blinding white light – I thought someone had turned on the production spotlights, but we were still sitting in the dark,” recalls guitarist Kaz Alvis. “When I mentioned it to the medium, her eyes got very big and she said it was a spirit trying to come through me.”

Kerrang! writes with their premiere of the video, “the band’s shadowy sound and black-drenched look are what brought death-obsessed punks into the fold since Dead Moon first twanged out of the darkness. As such, THE WRAITH offer a refreshing sound that is still scratches the classic punk itch at its root. The band’s new video for ‘Wing Of Night’ walks that line with endearing grace. The footage is stylized to look like it was found in a camcorder from 1984, and shows the band taking part in a Satanic Panic-style occult ritual.”

See THE WRAITH’s “Wing Of Night” video at Kerrang! RIGHT HERE.

Influenced by the likes of Killing Joke, T.S.O.L., and Samhain, THE WRAITH‘s post-apocalyptic Gloom Ballet delivers twelve infectious tracks. The album was recorded by Puscifer guitarist/producer Mat Mitchell, mastered at Audiosiege by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise, Tragedy, Alaric), completed with artwork by Rebecca Sauve.

Gloom Ballet is available worldwide via Southern Lord Recordings at the label webshop HERE, Bandcamp HERE, and through all other providers.

The “Wing Of Night” video is the first of several new videos to be issued from the Gloom Ballet LP. Watch for new videos, tour dates, and more on THE WRAITH to be issued over the coming months.

THE WRAITH: Kerrang! Streams Gloom Ballet LP By Los Angeles Dark Punk Act; Debut Album Sees Release Friday Through Southern Lord

Southern Lord presents Gloom Ballet, the debut LP by Los Angeles-based dark punk act, THE WRAITH. As the anxiously awaited album nears release this Friday, it is now streaming in its entirety exclusively through Kerrang! Accompanying the piece, the band’s own Paul Rogers provides a detailed feature on the history of THE WRAITH and their place in the LA punk circuit.

Influenced by the likes of Killing Joke, T.S.O.L., and Samhain THE WRAITH‘s post-apocalyptic Gloom Ballet delivers twelve infectious tracks. The album was recorded by Puscifer guitarist/producer Mat Mitchell, mastered at Audiosiege by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise, Tragedy, Alaric), completed with artwork by Rebecca Sauve.

Stream THE WRAITH’s Gloom Ballet exclusively through Kerrang! at THIS LOCATION.

Gloom Ballet will be released worldwide via Southern Lord on November 29th. Find preorders at the label webshop HERE and Bandcamp HERE.

THE WRAITH was founded by imposing frontman Davey Bales, formerly of Virginia peace-punks Lost Tribe, and Kaz Alvis shortly after they both (separately) washed up in Los Angeles. Their irresistibly distinctive sound – skeletal basslines and tribal beats propelling Alvis’ textured swathes beneath Bales’ poetic, anguished bark – immediately gained a following, with homemade demo Comatic Romance racking-up thousands of YouTube views. Convulsive, chaotic West Coast US shows honed the songs that became THE WRAITH‘s lauded 2017 EP, Shadow Flag.

Several videos and lineup changes later – the band now completed by former Blink-182 drummer Scott Raynor and Brit bassist Paul Rogers – their evocative songwriting and pure-punk authenticity earned the ear of Mat Mitchell, who has worked with Love And Rockets, The Flaming Lips, Meat Puppets, King Crimson, and more. Mitchell recorded the band’s debut LP, Gloom Ballet, and earlier this year, the band signed to Southern Lord Recordings for the worldwide release of the album.

WOLFBRIGADE: Swedish Hardcore Punk Outfit’s Tenth LP, The Enemy: Reality, Out Today Through Southern Lord

Long-running Swedish d-beat/hardcore punk icons WOLFBRIGADE today release their tenth full-length album, The Enemy: Reality, through their allies at Southern Lord Recordings.

On the wind-bitten plains of Skaraborg, Sweden, the wolves have arisen once again. They are on the prowl, yearning for your blood, warm and fresh. On their tenth album, WOLFBRIGADE cuts deep, and they are ruthless. This time they have only submitted to themselves, from recording to production and artwork working in isolation, resulting in heightened senses and sharpened fangs. The ten songs rip into both body and mind, with no holds barred regarding power, substance, and melody.

Let WOLFBRIGADE’s The Enemy: Reality off the chain through Bandcamp at THIS LOCATION.

WOLFBRIGADE‘s The Enemy: Reality sees release on LP, CD, and digital platforms next Friday, November 8th. Find preorders and merch options at the Southern Lord webshop HERE and at Bandcamp HERE.

Also see WOLFBRIGADE‘s video for “The Wolfman,” based on the theme of Sigmund Freud’s Wolfman’s Dream, directed by MeANkind, and edited by Henrik Norsell. The video is an incredibly stark, prime example not only of the band’s long-established but ever progressing sound, but of the band’s political message, beliefs, and outlook on humanity. A visual amalgamation of Orwellian overwatch by governmental powers, lessons unlearned from the nuclear arms race of the mid-1900s, and our current state of worldwide socio-political unrest serves as a backdrop for the band’s raging d-beat angst and scathing vocal detestation.

See WOLFBRIGADE’s video for “The Wolfman” HERE.

On The Enemy: RealityWOLFBRIGADE‘s hybrid beast of Swedish hardcore and death metal known as Lycanthro Punk has become even more distinct. These ten tracks of destruction display both a love for ’80s metal hooks and intros, as well as primitive hardcore brutality. The lyrics on The Enemy: Realitydissect the state of human existence, the bizarre animal presence that we are. The naked apes. Exploring the dynamics that rule man. Power and submission. Manipulation. The injustices of inequality. This is an album seething with anger and frustration.

The band remarks, “Humans are a narcissistic breed, incapable of real change. This album is a way for us to deal with the fact that we are one of a large pack, submitting to the same societal norms as everyone else. No matter how much we would like it to be different. We are all on the same crazy trip. The lyrics on The Enemy: Reality dissect the state of human existence, the bizarre animal presence that we are. The naked apes. Exploring the dynamics that rule man. Power and submission. Manipulation.”

THE WRAITH Shares Post-Apocalyptic “Wing Of Night” Single; Gloom Ballet Debut Album To Be Released Via Southern Lord November 29th

Los Angeles-based dark punk band THE WRAITH shares “Wing Of Night,” the first single from their incoming debut album, Gloom Ballet, set to be released worldwide through Southern Lord later this month.

Influenced by the likes of Killing Joke and 1919, THE WRAITH‘s post-apocalyptic “Wing Of Night” juxtaposes a relentless verse groove – the ominous march of a spiritual death squad – with faint hope flickering amidst its expansive chorus.

“‘Wing Of Night’ is about not just surviving the pain and struggle of living in a dark world, but also welcoming these,” says THE WRAITH vocalist/lyricist Davey Bales. He continues, “Embracing hell and rejecting heaven as your reality, but in a positive way.”

Gloom Ballet delivers twelve infectious tracks drenched in the band’s ’80s UK post-punk (Death Cult, Killing Joke, Chameleons) and SoCal deathrock (T.S.O.L., Samhain) influences. Recorded by Puscifer guitarist/producer Mat Mitchell, Gloom Ballet was mastered at Audiosiege by Brad Boatright (From Ashes Rise, Tragedy, Alaric) and the artwork by Rebecca Sauve.

DARKEST HOUR Announces November West Coast US Tour With Unearth; 25th Anniversary European Tour Kicks Off 2020

Washington, DC metalcore pioneers DARKEST HOUR announce a run of West Coast tour dates for December, with a nine-city co-headlining tour alongside Unearth.

Offers DARKEST HOUR, “2019, we are not done with you yet. Just added some shows on the West Coast with our dudes in Unearth! We have seen all the amazing feedback from you all, and we have listened. Both bands will be playing FULL headlining, rip’n, face melting sets. We have had a ton of fun all over the world with Unearth and we are stoked to slide these dates in before the end of the year. We have some huge things in store for 2020 but if you live in these cities come out and party like its 1999 with us and Unearth!”

A month later, DARKEST HOUR will kick off 2020 with a return to Europe for a sixteen-city special 25th anniversary tour, where they’ll be joined by special guests Fallujah, Bloodlet, Une Misere, and Lowest Creature.

The band comments, “It is with extreme excitement that we announce what we hope to be one of many tour’s next year celebrating our 25th anniversary! Over these past twenty-five years we have toured with both new and established bands and have always worked hard to make our tour packages diverse and interesting. This tour is in keeping with that tradition. Fallujah is ripping progressive death metal who have had our attention for a while, can’t wait to see these riffs live. Bloodlet is a very special band to us. One of our early influences, it is EASY to say we would not be a band (or at least not the same band) without their influence. We grew up going to their shows and it’s a joy to be able to share the stage with them. We got to see Une Misere play this summer and were impressed, insanely heavy, Icelandic mosh of the highest form. Lowest Creature is a killer blend of classic metal elements we all love translated with a new and distinctly Swedish twist. Oh, and you know we will have a few surprises planned for this set special 25th anniversary set. See you in the pit!”

Produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge), DARKEST HOUR‘s eleventh LP, Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora, continues to solidify the band’s legacy as a major metal powerhouse. Raw, complex, melodic, yet cutting with razor blade precision, Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora is a fierce album which shows the long-running band as lethal and ravenous as ever. Following its 217 release through Southern Lord, the band has continued to tour regularly throughout North America and Europe.

Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora is available on CD, black vinyl LP, picture disc LP, and all digital platforms via Southern Lord; find ordering options at the label’s webstore HERE, via Bandcamp HERE, and through all digital providers.
