American hardcore/punk super collective DEAD END AMERICA – formed by the late Steve “Thee Slayer Hippy” Hanford of Poison Idea, with current and former members of Queens Of The Stone Age, EyeHateGod, The Accüsed A.D., World Of Lies, Ape Machine, and more – presents their anti-Trump debut EP, Crush The Machine, out today through Southern Lord.
The four tracks on D.E.A.‘s Crush The Machine see primary writers drummer/vocalist Steve Hanford and guitarist Tony Avila (World Of Lies, Why Won’t You Die, Aborted Cop, Here’s Your Warning) joined by lead guitarist Ian Watts (Ape Machine, Minmae) and bassist/vocalist Nick “Rex Everything” Oliveri (Mondo Generator, The Dwarves, ex-Kyuss, ex-Queens Of The Stone Age), with additional lyrics and vocals from Mike IX Williams (EyeHateGod, Corrections House, Arson Anthem, Outlaw Order) and Blaine Cook (The Accüsed A.D., The Fartz, Toe Tag).
Crush The Machine was recorded at House Of Tain in Milwaukee, Oregon, The Magic Closet in Stayton, Oregon, and Mondo Generator Studios in Salton Sea, California. Mike IX’s vocals on “Bullet for 45 (Straight From A .45)” were recorded by Sanford Parker at Hypercube in Chicago, Illinois, and Blaine Cook’s vocals on “Searching For A Reason” were recorded at RGP in Portland, Oregon. Tony Avila states, “Steve was very special to all of us, whether it be his skills on the drum set, producing, or just hanging out with the guy, you couldn’t go wrong. It was always a good time. We are all going to miss him very much. Thankfully, we were able to get this going before he passed, and I can’t think of a better tribute to him than this. Beyond stoked to be able to work with him and the rest of the guys on this record. I think Steve would be happy and that’s the most important part. Cheers.”

“A perfectly appropriate title for this 7-inch EP of jack-hammering, old-school style hardcore tunes released by Southern Lord, written and played by a rogues gallery of real deal music lifers as a condemnation of the criminal Trump administration and republican party, in the same spirit of those by-gone days when Ronald Reagan or George Bush was the crooked, self-serving president of the crumbling United States empire. Never before has there been a more obvious target, as Donald Trump and his mafia family cabinet rape the country while Rome burns. D.E.A. is Tony Avila, Ian Watts, Nick Oliveri, Mike IX, Blaine Cook, and the legendary and beloved, late producer and drummer of Poison Idea, Steve ‘Thee Slayer Hippy’ Hanford. Dying shortly before the completion of this record, it stands as a final testament to his genius, one last hot-wired blast of his epic musical brilliance.” – Mark Lanegan, August 2020

Stream JESUS PIECE’s Ashe Kilbourne remix of “Punish” HERE.
Philadelphia-based metallic hardcore quintet JESUS PIECE presents a remix of “Punish” today, as re-envisioned by Ashe Kilbourne. The crushing remix strikes on the eve of the band’s anxiously anticipated Halloween livestream with Code Orange and more.
JESUS PIECE released their monolithic debut LP, Only Self, through Southern Lord in 2018, the album recorded at Bricktop Recording Studio in Chicago with Andy Nelson (Weekend Nachos, Like Rats, Dead In The Dirt), mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege (Integrity, Nails, Xibalba), and completed with artwork by Dom Pabon. The album received a wealth of critical acclaim from fans and media outlets alike, including being crowned the #1 hardcore album of 2018 by Stereogum.
Following its release, JESUS PIECE supported Only Self live through much of 2019 and early 2020, including tours with Darkest Hour, Comeback Kid, Burn, Knocked Loose, Terror, Vein, Year Of The Knife, Gag, Vamachara, and many others across North America, Europe, and Japan.
With touring at a standstill, JESUS PIECE continues crafting new material for release over the months ahead, and this week, they band’s first remix has been issued. The revamped version of “Punish” – found on the acclaimed Only Self LP – sees the song’s vicious breakdowns reworked by EDM artist Ashe Kilbourne.
“JESUS PIECE is always about bridging the gaps of all extreme music facets,” the band writes. “A lot that inspires our song writing rarely comes from other contemporary hardcore bands. We as a band are all over the spectrum as far as our music inspirations go. Lu has been a fan of gabber/hardcore techno since he was kid and we all respect and love electronic music, so it only makes sense for us to collab like this. Kilbourne is not only our friend, but one of the only real gabber techno producers coming out of the USA. We trusted her vision with maintaining the energy and rawness of our song. She destroyed it and created a new level of pain.”
Kilbourne offers, “I tried to carry what I love about JESUS PIECE into an electronics setting: punishing, relentless, percussion-driven music that pushes you to the edge. To me, metal and hardcore and gabber and speedcore exist on the same spectrum of extreme music, and the fact JP fucks with speedcore makes me stan even harder.”
Stream Ashe Kilbourne’s remix of JESUS PIECE’s “Punish” at THIS LOCATION.
Find the “Punish” remix at Bandcamp HERE, Spotify HERE, and iTunes HERE.
Tomorrow, JESUS PIECE will support their friends in Code Orange for a special concert event. The Halloween livestream environmental experience will kick off at 4pm EST, with additional opening support from Year Of The Knife and Machine Girl.

Decibel Magazine is hosting a new single by hardcore/punk super collective DEAD END AMERICA, formed by the late, great Steve “Thee Slayer Hippy” Hanford of Poison Idea, with current and former members of Queens Of The Stone Age, EyeHateGod, The Accüsed A.D., World Of Lies, Ape Machine, and more. The track acts as a warning shot preceding the release of the group’s debut EP, Crush The Machine, which was wholly captured before Hanford’s passing earlier this year, sees release through Southern Lord next week.
With the new single, “Bullet For 45 (Straight From a .45),” Tony Avila offers, “Songwriting-wise, we were aiming for a mixture of Poison Idea and The Accüsed.”
Mike IX Williams adds, “‘Bullet For 45 (Straight from a .45)’ is a rallying cry to fight back against a garbage infected, corrupted liar’s bullshit system and also a tribute to our late friend Steve Hanford aka ‘Thee Slayer Hippy.’ My only regret about this record is Steve didn’t live to see the final release, but I know he’d be proud of us. These songs are a timeless and much needed hardcore punk metal blast into the face of an untrusted authority…”
With the song’s premiere, Decibel writes, “Look no further than new single ‘Bullet for 45 (Straight From a .45),’ which will surely have me and every other contributor to this fine publication placed on a government watchlist, to get the gist of DEAD END AMERICA. Straightforward punk with rocking leads, the band accuse Trump of ‘making America stupid again’ and killing the American Dream.”

Stream ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF’s All Thoughts FlyHERE.
ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF presents her new album, All Thoughts Fly, out today through Southern Lord Recordings. Here, in solo instrumental mode, the entire record consists of just one instrument – the pipe organ – and represents absolute liberation of the imagination.
All Thoughts Fly radiates a melancholic beauty and is distinguished by fluid transitions of contrasting elements; calmness and drama, harmony, and dissonance, much like Sacro Bosco (“Sacred Grove”), the place that inspires the music. Sacro Bosco is a garden, based in the center of Italy, containing grotesque mythological sculptures and buildings overgrown with vegetation, situated in a wooded valley beneath the castle of Orsini. Created during the 16th Century, Sacro Bosco was commissioned by Pier Francesco Orsini, some say to try and cope with his grief following the death of his wife Guilia Farnese, others speculate the purpose was to create art.
The organ on All Thoughts Fly is situated in Gothenburg and is a Swedish replica of the Arp Schnitger organ in Germany. It is the largest organ tuned in Quarter-comma meantone temperament in the world. With its four manuals, one pedal and fifty-four stops, it was built as part of a ten-year research project reconstructing 17th Century North German organ building craft. The tuning temperament is an important detail to note here, as it deeply affects the sound and tuning, and thus radically changed the process of creating this album. ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFF speaks of a pleasant surprise during recording, the organ’s ability to create beautiful “pitching” notes through its stops and air supply system. She remarks, “We took advantage of this so most of the pitching sounds and notes that you hear on the album comes from the mechanics of this organ, effects made entirely acoustically.” The organ was recorded with two room mics for atmosphere and two pairs of close mics placed inside the organ to capture nuances and detail for further organ sound processing by Filip Leyman in his studio.
Recorded with mobile equipment from Svenska Grammofonstudion in Örgryte New Church, in Gothenburg January 2020, All Thoughts Fly was produced and mixed by ANNA VON HAUSSWOLFFand Filip Leyman, who both handled the organ sound design. The album was mastered by Hans Olsson at Svenska Grammofonstudion and completed with photography by Gianluca Grasselli and layout/design by Tina Damgaard.

About the album Anna explains, “There’s a sadness and wilderness that inspired me to write this album, also a timelessness. I believe that this park has survived not only due to its beauty but also because of the iconography, it has been liberated from predictable ideas and ideals. The people who built this park truly set their minds and imagination free. All Thoughts Fly is a homage to this creation, and an effort to articulate the atmosphere and the feelings that this place evokes inside of me. It’s a very personal interpretation of a place that I lack the words to describe. I’d like to believe Orsini built this monumental park out of grief for his dead wife, and in my Sacro Bosco I used this story as a core for my own inspiration: love as a foundation for creation.”
Anna summarizes, “Sacro Bosco in Bomarzo is a creation carved out from one man’s head. A frozen thought lasting throughout time and touching people across generations. All Thoughts Fly, Ogni Pensiero Vola, is about this: the importance of sharing for surviving, creating space and evolving. Once you’ve shared your words, they are not only yours anymore.” All Thoughts Fly ultimately embodies the exploration of any and all possibilities, and the audience is invited to listen, liberate the mind and let it wander.
Los Angeles hardcore punk quartet ENTRY will perform live for the first time since the ongoing global pandemic began, presenting a livestream set this Sunday.
ENTRY released their riotous debut LP, Detriment, through Southern Lord in July to widespread acclaim from fans and media alike. Compact and ferocious, Detriment is a diverse album and a breath of fresh air to the genre. The debut showcases their appreciation for different aspects of punk and hardcore, and their imaginative songwriting that is condensed into nine succinct musical statements of intent. As a collective, ENTRY firmly believes in the power of punk and the uniting nature of music, and with Detriment, they reflect themselves and their community with integrity and authenticity. Detriment was recorded in Los Angeles by the band’s Sean Sakamoto and Christopher Dwyer, mixed by Christopher Dwyer, and mastered by Will Killingsworth at Dead Air Studios. The album is completed with photography by Katie Krulock and layout by Emma Maatman.
ENTRY will perform a livestream set this Sunday, September 20th at 4:00pm Pacific via SOS Booking’s Sunday Matinees series on Twitch.tv. During this performance, ENTRY will perform their entire Detriment album, and the set will be joined by a Sin + Passion live set and DJ set by Nate And Friends.
Join the party from home and watch ENTRY’s live set at THIS LOCATION!
Detriment is available through Southern Lord Recordings on vinyl and digital through Bandcamp HERE, the label’s US webshop HERE, the Euro webshop HERE, and through all digital providers.
ENTRY started as a project between Sara G and Clayton Stevens inspired by the likes of Discharge, Minor Threat, Converge, Tragedy, The Cramps, and The Exploited. The punk community at large is as inspiring as it has ever been to them. Bassist Sean Sakamoto plays in the indie pop band Sheer and is a recording engineer in Los Angeles, where drummer Chris Dwyer is also a recording engineer. Sara’s musical origins come from punk bands in Pennsylvania, and Clayton also continues to play guitar in Touché Amoré on Epitaph Records. The band has played the Olympia Hardcore Festival, and Ceremony’s Homesick Festival in Los Angeles, and has opened for bands like Career Suicide, Krimewatch, Sunn O))), Dangers, Despise You, Sect, and Show Me The Body.
“Fierce, energetic hardcore from Los Angeles. The band’s 80s-inspired-yet-modern hardcore sound recalls peak-era Ceremony and other bands from the late-aughts surge of similar bands.” – Decibel Magazine
“ENTRY‘s sound is a particularly grimy take on basement punk, one that occasionally lurches from crusty D-beat into something that resembles black metal. Vocalist Sara G delivers every throat-scraping roar with total conviction, and the band keeps its riffs coated in mud and slime.” – Stereogum
“The band cite such influences as Discharge, Minor Threat, Converge, Tragedy, The Cramps, and The Exploited, and you can definitely hear that kind of stuff coming through in their dark, heavy, whiplash-inducing hardcore… It’s the perfect vessel for the rage and despair that vocalist Sara G delivers with pure venom.” – BrooklynVegan
“…they exist to play some of the most ripping and diverse hardcore out there… It’s fast, furious and to the point, but still manages to find time to be diverse. It’s a credit to the band, that they can pack so many different musical ideas into such a short run time. This isn’t your standard, by-the-numbers hardcore.” – New Noise Magazine
“…ENTRY travels back through time to the original state of the punk and hardcore scenes. The spirit of Discharge and Minor Threat, with a touch of the crust ethic displayed by the likes of Tragedy and the off-kilter early days of Converge, are all blended into a condensed form and unleashed through maximum projection… feral punk, with an old-school ethos yet modern flourishes.” – PopMatters
