In the mid-90’s, in the cold, bleak north of Seattle, Washington, two friends in their mid-20’s, Greg Anderson and Stephen O Malley, were wading deep in the behemoth dirge of the Melvins, and melting into Earth‘s expansive, glacial-paced, guitar-based soundscapes, heavily influenced by these sounds. Greg and Stephen were playing together in Thorr’s Hammer and Burning Witch, and tread their own paths after the demise of those bands, only to be brought back together in Los Angeles in 1998. In a new city, at the dawn of a new decade, the two went on to form a new band sunn O))) and launch Southern Lord Recordings with the vision of releasing recordings of these works.

SCREAM To Reissue NMC17 (No More Censorship) Via Southern Lord On April 27th; Deep Insight Into The Album Revealed + Preorders Posted
Southern Lord will reissue NMC17 (No More Censorship) from the seminal Washington, DC punk band SCREAM on CD and LP formats this April 27th, the band’s first album to feature drummer Dave Grohl.
The reissue is dedicated to the influential photographer Naomi Petersen who was instrumental in ensuring that the original No More Censorship master tapes survived. As a long-time friend of the band, Naomi has captured many memorable images of an era, including countless SST bands and SCREAM. Years after their first encounter, Naomi found the original tapes gathering dust, and passed them onto Pete Stahl before they perished. SCREAM saw this as a second chance to put the record out. The way they always wanted. Subsequently, Southern Lord had the tapes baked and prepped for a remix at Dave Grohl’s 606 Studio.
This new mix sounds vital and intense; the entire packaging, layout, and design is completely different from the original, with the inclusion of photos, lyrics, poetry, and other personal writings from the band during that era, collected in an extensive booklet.
There is another side to the story of this album of course, and deep-rooted reasons for bringing it to life again. As Pete Stahl explains, “This record was written and recorded during Reagan’s presidency. US foreign policy was being disruptive in Central and Latin America, Iran-Contra… Art and music was being censored. Ed Meese, Ronald’s Attorney General was appointed to do a report on the effect of pornography on society. Hearings were held in Congress about lyrics and albums, and warnings were placed on album covers. One bitter example being Dead Kennedys, who were taken to court over the Frankenchirst album’s Geiger poster. SCREAM raised money to help in the Dead Kennedys court battle, and more widely participated in benefits to raise money to fight this oppression. So much of what was going on then is still so relevant today. History repeats.”
Franz Stahl continues, “Activism and artivism was always very much a part of the SCREAM vernacular and a driving force behind the band’s music and attitude in the ’80s. As SCREAM brought the re-envisioned remix to the contemporary they also wanted the new artwork to parallel those ideas and update it to the present. Inspired by Ai Weiweii, the Chinese contemporary artist, and activist, famously known for his own serious struggles with censorship. The CD and vinyl covers are each unique, but both were created in the spirit of one of Weiewei’s own exhibits, and our idea, limiting or censoring information. Leaving only an acronym for the original title and a number for the year we did the remix (NMC17).”
Listen to “God Squad” from the album RIGHT HERE.
Southern Lord will now reissue SCREAM‘s everlasting NMC17 (No More Censorship) on April 27th in CD and LP formats.
Find preorders at the relaunched Southern Lord site HERE and Bandcamp HERE.
SCREAM was formed out of high school sometime in 1980 by vocalist Peter Stahl, his brother Franz Stahl on guitar, Skeeter Thompson on bass, and Kent Stax on drums. The next few years would see the addition of second guitarist Robert Lee Davidson. Following three LPs through Dischord Records – Still Screaming (1983), This Side Up (1985), and Banging The Drum (1986) – SCREAM’s No More Censorship was released via reggae label RAS Records in August 1988. The album was the first to feature (now famous) drummer Dave Grohl, who replaced Stax for the album, and stayed with the band until they disbanded in 1990.
Since disbanding, several incarnations of SCREAM have reunited/resurfaced for random tours and recordings since. Members of the band went on to form and play in countless other influential acts including Nirvana, The Foo Fighters, earthlings?, Wool, Queens Of The Stone Age, Goatsnake, The Suspects, and others.

EAGLE TWIN: The Thundering Heard (Songs Of Hoof And Horn) Streaming At Noisey; Album Out Friday Through Southern Lord
BAPTISTS To Release Third Album, Beacon Of Faith, Via Southern Lord On May 25th; New Track “Capsule” Now Streaming
Vancouver’s BAPTISTS announce their third full-length album, Beacon Of Faith, now confirmed for release through Southern Lord on May 25th. The album’s brooding “Capsule” has been made available for streaming.
Beacon Of Faith broadly follows the same trajectory as the album’s predecessors, Bushcraft (2013) and Bloodmines (2014) – combining the style of raw adrenaline-fueled emotion, venomous vocal delivery, gigantic guitar sound, and a visceral rhythmic propulsion – a sonic manifestation of desolate rage, bolstered by a palpable sense of urgency. The album is densely-packed, yet BAPTISTS’ sound is far from claustrophobic. There is melody amongst the dissonance, as the band more deeply explore the noise rock vistas that have always underpinned their sound.
Lyrics are drawn from the members’ direct experience of a broken society and general discontentment with everyday life. A multitude of issues are in the firing line, from the Canadian court system, issues surrounding substance abuse, mental health, and how the more fortunate, “tend to dismiss people who have been dealt a less-fortunate hand,” as guitarist Danny also reflects.
Beacon Of Faith was recorded at Godcity in Salem, Massachusetts with Kurt Ballou in July 2017, and mastered by Brad Boatright at Audiosiege in Portland, Oregon.
Hear BAPTISTS’ “Capsule” now at THIS LOCATION.
Southern Lord will release Beacon Of Faith on all formats on May 25th; watch for additional updates in the weeks ahead.
“Capsule” Lyrics:
Passing cheeks
A faucet’s drip
The right amount to
Anoint the pit
Saturation
Prevents the clunk
But I want to feel it
As it goes down
Taste what’s going to move me
Before I
Have fucking changed
The tablet drops
An essence seeps
Past consumption
Post misuse
Destination
Informed conceit
A planned reprieve
From culture’s feats
Beacon Of Faith Track Listing:
1. Worse Than Hate
2. Absolved Of Life/Spent Cells
3. Beacon Of Faith

VITAMIN X: Amsterdam-Based Hardcore Punk Act To Release New LP Through Southern Lord This Spring
Southern Lord welcomes Amsterdam, Holland’s long-running hardcore punk kings VITAMIN X to the label for the upcoming release of the band’s sixth full-length recording, Age Of Paranoia.
VITAMIN X has unloaded their energetic brand of rock and thrash-soaked hardcore punk since the late 1990s. Having operated through diehard DIY efforts, the band has amassed an arsenal of albums, EPs, singles, splits, and more across a wide array of underground labels, including Havoc Records, Tankcrimes, Underestimated, AgiPunk, Refuse Records, and many others. Their most recent two LPs were recorded by Steve Albini (Nirvana, Iggy Pop, Neurosis), and their 2016-released ”About To Crack” video went viral and reached more than a million views.
Well-known for their energetic and explosive live shows which attract fans from across the metal, punk, and rock spectrum, VITAMIN X has toured around the world several times, from Japan to the United States, from South America to Southeast Asia, and beyond. The band has played on MTV and many large fests including Hellfest, Maryland Deathfest, and many others, and recently toured with Baroness and Harley Flannagan’s Cro-Mags.
The newest chapter in the band’s lineage, the new VITAMIN X full-length, Age Of Paranoia, was recorded by Igor Wouters at ARC Studios in Amsterdam. Packing sixteen volatile tracks into a white-knuckled twenty-eight minutes, Age Of Paranoia surges with rapid-fire punk angst packed with ripping rock leads and raised-fist gang-chant anthems. The album includes several special guest guitar solos by J. Mascis (Dinosaur Jr., Witch) and Bubba Dupree (Void, Soundgarden, Dave Grohl’s Probot, Brant Bjork), and is completed with cover artwork is by Marald (Baroness, Kylesa, High On Fire).
VITAMIN X states of their liaison with Southern Lord, “This will be our first release on a major/bigger label as we’ve always operated in the do-it-yourself scene, even though bigger labels were interested in us in the past. We feel Southern Lord really fits with us, and Greg Anderson is an amazing guy, who just like us, comes from a hardcore punk background but is also into all kinds of other styles of music.”
Anderson offers, ”VITAMIN X creates music that pushes boundaries within a genre that is typically limited, a really unique fusion of old-school hardcore and rock, metal, and punk.”
Age Of Paranoia will be released on LP, CD, and digital formats May 18th through Southern Lord; watch for the artwork, track listing, audio samples, preorders, and more to be released in the weeks ahead.
VITAMIN X will be presenting their new songs for the first time at fests and shows throughout 2018; watch for tour dates to be announced throughout the year.

EAGLE TWIN Premieres “Heavy Hoof” At Revolver Magazine; Southern Lord Issues Preorders For The Thundering Heard (Songs Of Hoof And Horn)
The long-awaited third LP by Salt Lake City-based avant-doom duo EAGLE TWIN, The Thundering Heard (Songs Of Hoof And Horn), will see release through Southern Lord on March 30th. Advancing its release, the record’s Revolver Magazine is hosting a stream of the mammoth third track, “Heavy Hoof,” as preorders for the record are issued.
With the release of the new song the members of the band offer, “‘Heavy Hoof’ is the first EAGLE TWIN song we ever wrote so it has been something we have played throughout the years but never properly recorded until now. It’s a simple ditty, that has only gotten heavier over time, all about death and the devil and all that good stuff!”
Revolver refers to the song as, “a monstrously riffy modern take on the blues that could be based on a work song from centuries ago.”
Stream EAGLE TWIN‘s “Heavy Hoof” at Revolver RIGHT HERE.
Southern Lord will release The Thundering Heard on LP, CD, and digital formats on March 30th; find physical preorders HERE and digital at Bandcamp HERE.
Equally prevailing are the stories that shape EAGLE TWIN‘s musical output, drawing upon folklore, and also strongly informed by recent happenings in the world. Observing our relationship to nature, and the band’s own surroundings in the dead salt seas of Utah are themes that feature frequently across their musical canon. The Thundering Heard continues where the previous album The Feather Tipped The Serpent’s Scale ended.
EAGLE TWIN‘s commanding sound delivers like a tectonic force, where doom and blues collide. Gentry Densley’s dominating low-end vocal tone is like an instrument in itself, rumbling alongside towering riffs, and Tyler Smith’s powerful rhythmic propulsion. It is a compelling combination, particularly when you add melodious bluesy romp to the equation.
Stand by for additional previews, tour dates, and more on EAGLE TWIN to be announced shortly.

CENTURIES Debuts “May Love Be With You Always” Video Via Svbterranean; The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding Out Now On Southern Lord
Following the Southern Lord release of their second LP, The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding, a new video from CENTURIES has been premiered at Svbterranean. Set to the album track “May Love Be With You Always,” the video was filmed and edited by Derrick Flanagin, and uses footage from Germany, Italy, Austria, India, Thailand, Vietnam, and Japan.
In the band’s words, “The video is about human movement and the constant inertia we experience, frequently without taking time to properly reflect on it. Things we see, people we meet, places we go, stories we are told; events that are so fleeting they often don’t become catalogued in our memory and will forever exist only in that moment.”
Svbterranean dubs The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding as, “a dark epic that sidesteps genre conventions by incorporating atmospheric, sludge and melodic elements into the mix, while staying true to the band’s signature hellacious hardcore,” and issues of “May Love Be With You Always” in particular, “The track seethes with unbridled anger, which is channeled through throttling metallic hardcore instrumentation.”
See CENTURIES’ “May Love Be With You Always” video RIGHT HERE.
The Lights Of This Earth Are Blinding surges with ten new tracks of CENTURIES’ harrowing, metallic, punk/crust-influenced hardcore, delivered with a calculated, very deliberate approach.
The albumis out now through Southern Lord on LP and digital formats; find the record at the label webstore HERE and stream/purchase via Bandcamp HERE.
CENTURIES will tour Europe for the fourth time in April and May alongside Portrayal Of Guilt, with additional international as well as stateside tour dates to be expected this year.

“Fusing elements of dissonant hardcore, d-beat punk, and a knack for walloping tones, the band has taken the last five years and honed the overall sound and writing approach. This latest effort affords a new level of intensity and artistry.” – Blow The Scene
“For what is ostensibly a crust record, Centuries aren’t afraid to experiment with the formula, exploring hidden alleyways to broaden and deepen their pitch darkness. At times delicate, at times destructive, but always sinister, they never truly let you off that emotional butcher’s hook.” – Metal Hammer
“While they repeatedly deliver the goods when it comes to short-and-not-sweet blasts of Trap Them-esque hatred, they are not rigidly attached to one ferocious sound, and elements of post-metal and sparse acoustic passages add extra gravitas to proceedings…further demonstrating the strengths of a truly thrilling young band.” – Kerrang!

DARKEST HOUR: Noisey Premieres Official Video For “Enter Oblivion” As US And European Tours Approach
Washington, DC-based metal quintet DARKEST HOUR has filmed an official video for the song “Enter Oblivion”, which hails from their eleventh LP, Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora, released in 2017 through Southern Lord. The new video has been issued through an exclusive premiere at Noisey, as the band prepares to embark on a new run of tour dates on two continents.
The new video for “Enter Oblivion” was directed by DARKEST HOUR vocalist John Henry with director of photography Ben Hoffman and produced and edited by Chad Fjerstad. Henry states on filming the video, “I wanted to find a location that I felt would represent the nomadic theme of the song. When I came across Rainbow Basin outside of Barstow I immediately knew it was the right spot. There’s a real beauty about the bleakness and harshness of the desert which stands out as the true star of the video.”
Adds guitarist Mike Schleibaum, “We chose the song ‘Enter Oblivion’ because it shows a different side of the album then we first presented. This song sits in the middle of the album and although it doesn’t crush with the same speed as the others it presents a depth that is all its own. The style of this song really allows for the band to breath sonically and the production of Kurt Ballou to really stand out on this track, especially in those drums! This is song for those who live outside of the borders of man and the laws of nature. For those who have found themselves in the act of constantly searching.”
Noisey notes with the premiere, “The quest that DARKEST HOUR, the D.C. melodeath warriors, have been on for more than two decades is one that is wholly about tearing faces off with precision, intent, and riffs. The band’s most recent album, last year’s great Godless Prophets And Migrant Flora, showcased them knowing exactly what kind of music they wanted to make and how to make it.”
See DARKEST HOUR’s “Enter Oblivion” at Noisey RIGHT HERE.
Produced by Kurt Ballou (Converge) at his Godcity studo, Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora continues to solidify the long-running DARKEST HOUR’s legacy as a major metal powerhouse. Raw, complex, melodic, yet cutting with razor blade precision, Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora is a fierce album which shows the long-running band as lethal and ravenous as ever.
Godless Prophets & The Migrant Flora is available on CD, black vinyl LP, picture disc LP, and all digital platforms via Southern Lord; find ordering options at the label’s webstore HERE, and via Bandcamp HERE.
Following several crushing runs through different regions of North America in support of the album, DARKEST HOUR is about to embark on the first of two new upcoming tours in two weeks. Beginning February 16th, the band will storm across the eastern US through February 25th, with support from Whores and Extinction A.D.
DARKEST HOUR has also announced another new tour in recent days, which sees them hitting Europe this Spring. The tour runs from April 5th and runs all the way through the 29th and sees them paired with Cephalic Carnage and Harlott supporting Havok.
